Contributions of the Han

The Invention of Paper:

This was one of the most important inventions of the Han Chinese. The oldest surviving piece of paper was discovered in a tomb near Xian in 1957. It is believed to have been manufactured during the reign of Wudi. ( This would make it more than 2,000 years old! )

Paper made by the Chinese in the early days were thick, strong and rough, thus it was not suitable for writing. Instead it was used at that time for wrapping things and for clothing. It was only when the technique of paper making was improved that paper was used for writing purposes.

The Invention of the First Seismograph:

Another important invention done during the Han dynasty was the invention of the seismograph. The seismograph was an instrument used to tell when and where an earthquake had occurred. It was important to the Chinese for China at that time was often troubled by earthquakes and when that happens , people in the affected areas often became involved on riots and rebellions due to shortage of food.

With the invention of the seismograph, the Emperor could immediately know when and where an earthquake had occurred and send help and food quickly to the people.
